NORTH SHORE/Vancouver
|
|
|
|
|
| Why |
This is pretty much where technical trail riding began. Sure those hippys kicking it on clunkers down in California started ripping down hill fire roads, but Todd 'Digger' Fianders and his trail building crew are responsible for taking mountain biking to a whole new level.
A network of skinny bridges, teeter totters, sweet hucks and flowing trails spiral down through the thick woods on mount Mt.Seymour and Fromme looming over the city of Vancouver.
Trails vary from sweet singletrack to expert only, with names like 'Severed Dick', 'Flying Circus' and 'Ladies Only'.

| What |
Riding the Shore is all about local knowledge but there is now an organisation called the North Shore Mountain bike association (NSMBA) which provides alot of useful info right from trail descriptions, maps and how to find the trail head.
Many of the North Shore trails on Mt. Crypress were torn down by forestry commission authorities but the NSMBA has worked hard to gain rights to build stunts in the woods. Trails are rigorously maintained and you can even join in on the regular trail maintenance days and put something back in. Maybe make peace with that drop thats been bucking you over the bars every time. See the NSMBA website to get more info on where to ride and how to help with the trails.
Click here to download a map of the trail network on Fromme (Grouse Mountain Resort).
Make no mistake, the shore is one of the most technical riding areas in the world and you can seriously screw your shit up if you do not give it the respect it deserves. Git your armour on and ride the sickest trails you ever saw.

| When |
The likes of Dangerous Dan and his funky bunch ride these trails all year but it rains in Vancouver. It rains like nowhere on this planet, and when the temperatures drop in the winter, there can be a ton of snow. From June till early September is your best bet and it stays relatively cool in the woods in spite of temperatures climbing into the 30s(C) through July and August. Flights are Cheapest throughout June and then early September. |
